This park is considered one of the most beautiful and valuable cultural landscapes in the Tyrol.

Our favourite spot:

The lion pond with a view of Matzen Castle

Originally built as a tower fortress, Schloss Matzen was built in the 1600's. It is home to two wildlife filled ponds (the Löwenteich and the Karpfenteich) and the Nympheum, a historic stone structure built out over the Karpfenteich (Pike Pond).

The castle is surrounded by a magnificent park, which was commissioned by Baron von Lipperheide and designed according to the English model. The park includes two man-made ponds: the Lion Pond and the Carp Pond with the so-called Nympheum, and many of the more than 40 exotic trees and shrubs date back to the time when the park was built.

Walk in the park

Matzen Castle Park is ideal for walks followed by a stop at the Gut Matzen restaurant with a view of the castle. There are also numerous hiking trails around Matzen Park. Whether it's a family hike to the castle park or a circular castle hike - Matzen Castle, together with the castles and palaces in its vicinity, Lipperheide Castle, Lichtwehr Castle and Kropfsberg Ruin, are always worth a visit. Other paths lead from the park up to Reith im Alpbachtal.
