The land of herbs in Brandenberg
The aroma of dried herbs sets my nose twitching curiously.
I must admit I don’t really know a lot about herbs but the Messners on the „Neuschwendt“ farm can answer all your questions. In the mountain village Brandenberg you will not only find living tradition and unspoilt nature but also knowledge handed down through the generations about the healing properties of Alpine herbs, I find this very comforting.
For over 23 years Gertrude Messner and her husband run the „Neuschwendt“ mountain farm, where she cultivates her green treasures in a permaculture herb garden. Not only do the herbs smell wonderfully aromatic but they can be used for all kinds of small complaints.
Gertrude took the task upon her to process the indiginous medicinal herbs in creams, oils, teas and mixtures. In particular practitioners of alterative medicine swear that „there’s a herb for every ailment“ and according to Gertrude all you have to do is use natures powers growing on our doorstep. „Tell me Gertrude, have you got a herbal remedy for chronic curiosity?“
Gertrude’s herbal knowledge is much appreciated in Austria and abroad. She has written two books – „Gertrude Messners Kräuterhandbuch“ and „Gesund durchs Jahr mit der Kräuterbäuerin“ (both are published by the Löwenzahn Verlag). I sometimes have her book with me when I’m out and about discovering the world around me.
Every Thursday from June – September from 10.00 a.m. -12.00 p.m. guided herbal tour with Gertrude Messner’s best tips (free for guests). And if a certain herb has attracted your particular attention you can purchase one of her homemade natural products on site.
