200 years ago the traveling singers from the Tyrol sold their goods and songs at European markets. Today their story is celebrated at local Christmas markets, 2018 in Rattenberg/Tyrol. An ensemble of actors and actresses wander from market to market singing, dancing and sharing the „Stille Nacht“ story from their hawker’s trays – as in the past, the carol will outshine all other songs.
For many years Tyrol‘s renown singer, Ludwig Rainer, was the Gasthof Hirschen (todays Kanzler Biener restaurant) inn keeper in Rattenberg. 1839 the Rainer Family Singers ventured forth to New York, where on 24th December 1839 they performed "Silent Night!" - for the first time on American soil - in front of the Hamilton monument. Over the period of ten years he gave numerous concerts in Russia both in St. Petersburg and Moscow. No doubt he took „Stille Nacht“ with him on his travels.
