The Brandenberg Valley in the Alpbachtal region with its wild romantic labyrinth of steep and deep gorges, valleys and densely forested areas is home to a rich biodiversity.

Thanks to the near-natural dynamics of the forest and the remoteness from large settlements the area is home to an above-average amount of butterfly habitats. As far, as is currently known over 800 different butterfly species can be found! Discover for yourself the Brandenberg butterflies, their beauty, lightness and their natural habitat! A guided tour through the fascinating butterfly fauna hot spots is an ideal way to watch these miraculous creatures.

The best time for butterfly watching:

  • Ideal: mid-June - mid-August
  • Quite good: end of May - beginning of September

Author’s recommendation
Take the useful "Brandenberg Valley of Butterflies" folder with you! The folder is full of useful information about the butterflies' habitat and the surrounding flora.
Safety guidelines
In case of very bad weather we advise not taking the route through the Kaiser Gorge, but taking the forest track.
Directions

The scenic circular trail starts at the Gasthof Kaiserhaus in Brandenberg and leads through the Oberen Kaiserboden, the Brandalm and the Weißach estuary butterfly habitats. The route back is along secured paths through the impressive Kaiser Gorge or along the forest track. For a shorter route, one can walk back from the "Trauersteg", but misses out on a particularly pretty area where the Weißache (stream) joins the Brandenberg River.
