Castles & palaces

READY FOR A LITTLE TRIP BACK IN TIME?

Marvel at magnificent buildings

We take you to the most beautiful castles and impressive fortresses in the Alpbachtal, which await you with medieval charm.
Our numerous magnificent buildings and noble walls are an integral part of the Tyrolean landscape. The valuable cultural assets found in many places in the Alpbachtal can be marvelled at during a leisurely stroll through nature.

Forget the prince, I'll take the palace!

Matzen Park

Matzen Park lies southwest of Brixlegg. The castle is embedded in a magnificent English garden. The picturesque park with ponds and exotic plants is one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in the Tyrol.

Matzen Park is ideal for strolls followed by a stop at the Gut Matzen restaurant with a view towards the castle. Matzen Castle, a hotel, can only be admired from the outside unless you book an overnight stay in the fairytale castle hotel.

Can we let you in on a secret?
One of our favourite places in the Alpbachtal can also be found in the park.

Schlossberg & ruin Rattenberg

Small but mighty! There is a lot to marvel at in Austria's smallest town and the view of Rattenberg is even better from the top. We definitely recommend a walk to the Schlossberg with its medieval castle ruins.

The castle ruins are perched on a plateau high above Rattenberg. Today you can still visit the Biener tower and parts of the old keep. From up there, the whole of Rattenberg is at your feet.

Theatre fans take note: In summer, the Schlossbergspiele always take place in this spectacular setting. You can't afford to miss it.

Kropfsberg Castle Ruin

The Kropfsberg castle ruins date back to the 12th century and are located in the municipality of Reith im Alpbachtal.

The best way to admire the only castle ruins with three towers in the Alpbachtal is from the outside, for example on a hike or a walk, as the castle is not open to the public.

Lichtwerth island castle

A castle on an island?
That's right! Originally, Lichtwerth Castle was located on an island in the river Inn, but the course of the river was changed by the regulation of the Inn.

The 12th-century Lichtwerth island castle is located close to Matzen.

The castle is inhabited - we therefore recommend the "Castle Loop", which leads past the numerous old splendid towers.
