Rattenberg Advent

In medieval Rattenberg, Austria's smallest town, Advent has always been celebrated in a very special way! Without the usual Christmas market stands, but with lots of candlelight, warming fireplaces and a special mulled wine.
Due to the Covid-19 situation, the previous customs programme had to be changed.

Pre-Christmas Charm in Rattenberg - Tyrol

Explore one of Tyrol´s most beautiful and romantic Advent markets in the medieval town of Rattenberg. Regional culture is proudly celebrated in traditional handicraft and local culinary fare. The impressive medieval town situated on the River Inn provides the unique setting for this annual event. Fire features an all important role in many cultures and rites. Especially around Advent the importance given to the element Fire comes to light. On the four Advent Saturdays Rattenberg is illuminated solely by candle light, torchlight and open fires. Visitors are drawn to the town by the atmosphere that is created. Bathed in natural light, Rattenberg evokes a feeling of warmth and security.

At various stalls throughout the town one can buy regional specialities such as the Rattenberg Advent wine, a mulled wine with elderberries served in an original Rattenberg Advent glass. There are no typical Christmas market stalls, instead, the local shops in the medieval town are open. A visit to the one of the glass shops is an absolute must. Rattenberg and its glass craft is well known beyond Austria’s borders. Take a moment to watch glass being blown, engraved and painted on.
