Schlossberg Theatre Rattenberg 2026
There are people so poor that all they have is money. For a long time, an old, broken angel in a dirty garment and with a broken wing has been living on the Schlossberg of Rattenberg. He is a remnant of another time, when people still saw angels instead of satellites when they looked into the sky. Growing tired and – to be honest – somewhat grumpy, he tells the story of Saint Notburga, a servant girl who hung up her sickle in the last ray of sunshine and thus earned respect for quitting time. The story of a foundling picked up by hat makers in Rattenberg, who was made the decision-maker of Rottenburg by the Counts of Tyrol at a young age. Confident that God holds His hand over her and has great plans for her, the unmarried Notburga becomes the mother to the beggars at the gate of Rottenburg, whom she feeds with the remnants of the noble table, according to good Christian virtue – until Ottilie appears, the new mistress of Rottenburg and wife of Heinrich the Second. Under her, Notburga’s actions suddenly become a waste of noble goods; capitalism overwhelms the land under Meinhard of Tyrol – and Notburga is expelled from Rottenburg for disobedience, suddenly finding herself at its gates – with nothing in her hand and an empty sky above her.
Everything is gone; the underbelly is turned upwards. The Most High has – if He exists – taken His hand away from her. She must somehow continue to live – and takes a job as a servant girl with a farmer in Eben am Achensee. But she has an angel with her, who guides her fate – even her deep fall from conductor to servant girl. Because we do not go to heaven because we want to go to heaven.
Now “Notburga” has found its home again at the Schlossberg Games in Rattenberg with its world premiere: A legend, a medieval piece that transports its audiences into the realm of archetypes, where the demons of greed, envy, and avarice become visible, in which the holy is a girl who believes she has fallen from the divine plan – and yet could not be closer, as suddenly the sickle gets caught in the last ray of sunshine. For we do not find salvation, but salvation finds us.
I am proud and grateful and feel honored about the realization of my first play at the Rattenberg Schlossberg Games.
