Schlosspark Matzen

Schloss Matzen | © Alpbachtal Tourismus

Originally built as a Tower Fortress Schloss Matzen was built in the 1600's.

This park is considered one of the most beautiful and valuable cultural landscapes in the Tyrol. Schloss Matzen stands centre proud. The Park is home to two wildlife filled ponds (the Löwenteich and the Karpfenteich) and the Nympheum, an historic stone structure built out over the Karpfenteich (Pike Pond).

In 1883 the learned authority of books and collector of antiquities, Franz Freiherr von Lipperheide tried to buy Schloss Matzen and ended up filing 22 court cases against the then owner William H Baille-Groham, who had changed his mind.  He lost every hearing.  He reciprocated by buying up land surrounding the castle.  He then built his own castle based on the archetypel English design and called it Schloss Neumatzen.  It stands separate to the Arboretum at the end of the Löwenteich (Lion Pond).

Numerous walking paths can be found around Matzen Park. Whether a family walk in the park or a circular walk around the park  – Schloss Matzen and  castles Lipperheide (Neumatzen) , Lichtenwehr and the Kropfsberg ruin are views to remember.
Other paths lead from the park up to Reith im Alpbachtal.
