Leonhardiritt in Kundl
According to legend, the pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard in Kundl is attributed to a betrothal: Heinrich II is said to have been reminded by his horse around 1019 of an earlier promise to build a church here in Kundl. The custom of the Kundler Leonhardiritt has been documented since the 1960s. The impetus for the establishment of this custom was the lack of funds urgently needed for the restoration of the pilgrimage church.
At a meeting of the regional cattle breeding association, the idea of a Leonhardiritt was well received, and with the readiness to pay a fee per unit of large and small cattle, the foundation for this custom was laid. The proceeds from the sale of Leonhard coins, Leonhard pennies, and Leonhard plaques largely covered the renovation costs. Since then, the custom of the Leonhardiritt has been maintained annually in Kundl: in honor of the beloved patron of cattle, Leonhard.
The ride will begin in front of the parish church in Kundl and continuing towards St. Leonhard. The procession will be led, as always, by the Kundl music band. Appropriately, along with the decorated horses and carriages, the festive wagon with the harvest crown will also be present. Following that, there will be an open-air mass and horse blessing with local pastor Dr. Piotr Stachiewicz and Pastor Mag. Erwin Mayer.
A cozy conclusion with donuts, sausages, cake, and much more at the Leonhardifestl.
The event takes place in any weather!
